Every single athlete needs to incorporate jumping into their sports performance program. For this session, the goal is to utilize energy from our current movement to propel us in our upcoming movement. We have the fantastic ability to utilize stored energy to create more fluid and effortless movements, we just need to utilize this energy before it dissipates. The best way to improve this ability... plyometrics!

A huge mistake we see is that many soccer players neglect training their upper body. We have to make sure that we're including upper strength into their training program to become all around stronger and more powerful. We love the OGs of upper body strength, especially pull up and push up variations, while also getting in plenty of landmine work and other exercises to challenge our athletes.

Athletes need to be able to express force at rapid speeds, so we need to make sure we're training them to excel in this ability. Building foundational strength is very important since it improves our potential for force production, but we need to also train moving load fast. Here are some exercises we love to use with our athletes to train speed strength. We love some trap bar, landmine, and barbell work to improve our fast force production.

Make sure you're including rotational plyos into your training program. These require so much body control and stabilization to be able to rotate as we jump and when we land. Rotation is a key aspect to athleticism and sporting performance, and it is an element that we can develop to aid in our ability to produce force. Here is a progression we use with our athletes when introducing our rotational plyos. Hope this helps!

just came from watching your video on overhead pressing. i am a professional dancer and most of my workout is horizontal push pull with only half kneeling pull down being my vertical work. for my shoulders i normally do trx Ws, Ys, and lateral Raises as well. i have been thinking about pressing and when i used to press before i used to do a half kneeling dumbbell neutral grip overhead Press and i am thinking about adding it back to my program as i feel like as much as i care and train my shoulders more "directly" i think having a press is good for just overall strength. though i only have dumbbells available to me.

I think overhead pressing is super important! It's fantastic for strength and stability of the shoulder and supporting muscles. For high volume shoulder sports, we just need to be particular with our exercise selection also noting the nuances of the athlete. But definitely love overhead pressing, especially with a dumbbell! TRX W's, Y's, and T's are some of my favs!!!

Today was simple in terms of the goal: how quickly can you react to get to the ball, and how fast can you move load. We need to make sure our baseball players have a solid strength foundation, and one that they can use to produce force fast. We have to be building some highly explosive athletes that can react to the ball with immense athleticism. So make sure to include that velocity training and reaction training in your programs!

1/2 Kneeling starts are great to train massive force production with athletes. There is no countermovement, so in order to explode out, they need to produce all the force to move. There are many exercises we can do with a 1/2 kneeling start, but some of them that we love are sprints, jumps, and med ball exercises. It's all about being able to create loads of force as fast as we can, and this is a great tool to utilize.

Frontal plane training is critical for athletes, especially soccer players. Here are some exercises we love to use with our athletes. We hit frontal plane with some isos, with different loading demands, and with different speeds. We need to train strength, stability, and control during frontal plane movements to excel in our athleticism and to reduce injury risks. One of my favorites is the band accelerated lateral lunge, where the band accelerates the lunge movement. It's important to be strong and stable during rapid loading, and this is a great frontal plane exercise to train this.

A big part of athleticism is coordination. We make sure to train this a lot with our athletes in various ways, but when we hit coordination with plyos, it's easily one of my favorite sessions. I tell our athletes that being in control of your body is the most important thing. We have to connect mind and muscles to perform these highly coordinated tasks. Also, big shoutout to Caleb. This kid is an absolute athletic stud who also happens to be one of the hardest workers I know. Deserves everything he earns!

It's very important to build strength and stability for soccer players. They both balance each other out and develop a very well rounded athlete. We do a lot of unilateral training with our soccer players, such as in these videos, and exercises that challenge their ability to use their strength to stabilize themselves in different positions with varying demands. For the leg extension iso, we always make sure to keep a slight bend in the knee to maintain joint health!

Reps depend on a lot of factors. Make sure the form looks really good first and foremost. For the lighter intensity ones, you can do more reps (10-20), and for the higher intensity, we stick to lower reps as a general rule of thumb.

Measuring ground contact time is a great way to improve an athlete's quickness and explosion. We want to be able to produce high amounts of force as fast as possible, so we want the jumps to be high and the ground contact time to be fast. Many athletes get stuck on the ground for too long during explosive movements, allowing usable energy to dissipate. We need strength during the transitional phase so we can utilize loading forces to propel our take off. There's a natural balance between jump height and ground contact time, but through training, we can always improve!

These are 4 of my favorite drills to do for agility with our athletes. We have to make sure we have great change of direction mechanics before we can get into all of these, but once we build that base, we can incorporate more reactionary drills. I always tell our athletes that the goal is to be able to analyze a situation very quickly and react/respond. If we can do this, we put ourselves in a great position to win our battles!

Tell me you don't know what you talking about without telling me... if this are the best strengths exercises you were too do for preseason, i want to play against the players in this team, because my team will be stronger, faster, and over them. Time and effort is gold. Instead of doing all these useless exercises it would be better to do SIIT, compound movements and bleachers. Lots of stretching and special attention to shoulder training. This would be a waste of training and energy that could go into so many other exercises.

We usually follow similar progressions, but with athletes who aren't as young, we can progress usually quicker because a lot of youth athletes we just have to teach basic body control and movement patterns. So it's similar but usually with more advanced progressions!

To be really good at agility, you have to be really good at changing direction. You can't have 1 without the other, and in order to be really good at changing direction, you need to excel at decelerating. The off season is our time to break down mechanics to clean them up and strengthen our foundation. The goal of these drills is to perfect our transitions during linear change of directions. I have Alex stopping at each transition to ensure he's in a good position and so he can actively think of how his first step should look out of this position. We want no negative steps coming out of our transition, so during this stage, this is the goal. We don't want speed at the expense of poor mechanics as this will limit our capacity in the future.

  • @PowerLuxFitness

Developing the ability to produce force with an athlete is 1 thing. Developing the ability to produce lots of force at high speeds is another. Both are important, as the more force we can produce, the more power potential we have. However, athletes need the ability to produce these forces at rapid speeds, so we need to make sure we're training our athletes to express force fast. To do this, we move load fast with exercises like a hang clean or speed pull, and we do a lot of plyometrics to move our body as explosively as possible.

Lower limb strength is beyond important for athlete development. We see so many athletes who are weak throughout the lower limb, especially the foot and ankle. This is where the common phrase comes in: you're only as strong as your weakest link. If you train your body to produce ample amounts of force, but neglect to train the lower limb, let's say the feet & ankles, then they are at a limited capacity for force they can withstand. We then run the risk of losing force we've generated elsewhere because our lower limb can't handle these loads efficiently, not to even mention they'd also lack the ability to properly utilize forces returning from the ground. Notice on Eden's sprint how stiff her feet & ankles are when she's accelerating.... that's exactly what we want! Here are some exercises we use for this development!

Plyometrics are awesome for improving sprint speed, as they teach athletes how to produce lots of force fast. This is essential for becoming faster, since the more force we can put into the ground at faster rates, the faster we will become. There are many plyos we can do with athletes that will work great, but these are 4 that we absolutely love. The goal is horizontal force production, especially working on the acceleration phase. Make sure plyos are part of your sprint program!

You can definitely do an RDL with a banded lateral walk. To be honest, you can pretty much pair most things. I usually just stay away from exercises that target and hit the same area in the same way for a compound and corrective pairing. For example, just with a compound and corrective pairing, I wouldn't really pair SL Box Squats with Step Downs since they are basically the same exercise. But you can honestly pair many things together!
